For 10 days in summer 2003, Brixton will become an
international focal point of black cultural and creative industries
achievements. London has enjoyed a substantial black population for over 500
years and has now become the most racially and culturally diverse city in the
world. Brixton has become the symbolic heart of the black experience in the UK
and a focal point for the African diaspora. When Wesley Snipes, Terry McMillan,
Muhammed Ali, Maya Angelou, Nelson Mandela and countless other famous black achievers
come to London, they make a point of visiting Brixton and its remarkable
communities. Brixton is alive with black cultural enterprise. The time has come
to create, to celebrate and to promote the Brixton renaissance.
Thousands of people discover connections for trade, commerce and
creativity via the vibrant Brixton community. Destinationbrixton will create a global marketplace for people and
businesses to come together to trade, create and exchange. Brixton's market
stalls, shops, bars, clubs and café's will all be part of Destinationbrixton. The whole place will be on its toes,
suggesting what city life could and should be like all year round.
Destinationbrixton will take you on
a journey of discovery. There has never been an event quite like this.
